Goal of Giving

What brought Bobby N. Setzer to Western was the chance to play football. What kick-started his career was the degree he earned along the way. What inspired him as a faculty member and coach were alumni. Many, like him, had come to Cullowhee for the love of a game and developed a love for the university – the place where they earned degrees that made so many successes possible in their lives.

Tom Riggle can trace his love of boats to a Michigan pier where as a child he used to watch wooden boats cross the lake. “They have a unique sound – kind of throaty and mellow, a soft rumbling,” said Riggle. “I thought, ‘Boy, someday I am going to have one of those,’ and then they quit making them.”

Passport to Education

Mitra Shabani MS ’16, originally from Iran, found WCU after repeatedly seeing the name of a WCU professor – Martin Tanaka – on research papers about biomechanical engineering and tumor growth. After her father’s battle with stomach cancer, Shabani wanted to put her math and physics skills to work modeling cancer tumors and how they grow.

WCU faculty assist with Cherokee language documentary

“It’s not only about Cherokee,” said filmmaker Neal Hutcheson. “It’s about what language means to people, and it means more than communicating. Cultural nuances that have to do with your entire disposition toward the world, the natural environment and other people are part of language, and when you lose a language, you lose a dimension. You lose a window into our common humanity, and it doesn’t matter what language you are talking about.”

Students promoting international service

Kylee Baquero, a student registered nurse anesthetist from WCU who participated in a Hope for Honduras mission, said the purpose was "not only to develop a sense of philanthropy, but also to take students back to a time when anesthetists always had a finger on the pulse, used their senses to assess their patients and never turned their back on the operating field."

Volunteer Ventures
